Klimaschutz gemeinsam wagen!
Together with stakeholders and residents in Karlsruhe, the project “Klimaschutz gemeinsam wagen!” has raised awareness of climate protection and promoted a culture of sustainability. Through specially developed initiatives – such as self-experiments, a free cargo bike rental program, and personalized climate coaching – we were able to encourage people to integrate more climate protection into their daily lives.
Project duration: 2018-2022

Try something new with a self-experiment
The self-experiment format was a central element of the project. Participants could choose from a total of eight self-experiments and six “climate actions” covering various topics. While the self-experiments were about questioning everyday routines and ingrained habits and changing them on a trial basis for a certain period of time, the “climate actions” focused specifically on the implementation of a one-time but highly effective climate-friendly measure. This allowed each person to contribute to greater climate protection in a playful and personalized way.
The target was to reduce CO2 emissions. To document the CO2 savings and for research purposes, participants filled out an online tool and questionnaires. There, they could also record their experiences with the experiment.
Climate coaches support, motivate and guide
To provide participants with even better support for their self-experiments, we brought twelve climate coaches on board. They were a vital part of our project, as they helped people carry out their experiments and provided ongoing support over an extended period. They answered questions and gave advise. At the same time, they served as a source of emotional support, motivating participants to persevere even during difficult phases of their self-experiments.
Together with our project partner, the Karlsruhe Energy and Climate Protection Agency (KEK), we organized ten informational sessions for our climate coaches. There, they were provided with all the important information about their work and had the opportunity to network with one another.
Thanks to the initiative of our climate coaches, the implementation of several activities took place: For example, a podcast titled “Climate Protection Starts in the Mind,” a city walk on the topic of veganism, and harvest events in orchard meadows.
Cycling through Karlsruhe on cargo bikes
Within the scope of the project, we were able to purchase our first cargo bikes. They were funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and the National Climate Action Initiative. We have since expanded our cargo bike fleet. Find out everything about our .
Climate-friendly eating and drinking
To act in a climate-friendly way in our daily lives, we need a variety of sustainable products to choose from, including in the food division. To promote sustainability in the local restaurant industry, we collaborated with restaurants in Karlsruhe as part of this project, advising and supporting them along the way.
Sustainability Consultations
The free consultations focused on finding more climate-friendly solutions for the business, such as introducing a reusable deposit system or adding more seasonal and regional dishes to the menu.
Energy Check
Our project partner KEK, in collaboration with KEFF, offered a free energy audit. After touring the facility, they identified potential energy savings and recommended measures tailored to the specific needs of the business.
Networking
Learning from and inspiring one another: close collaboration with and among the participating companies was our top priority. That’s why we offered several courses as well as a digital platform for networking.
As part of the project, a digital overview map of reusable food containers in Karlsruhe was also created. The map highlights restaurants that offer one or more reusable options (as of 2022):
